Job search advice and Other ways to generate income

It is a tough job market, and with different barriers, not enough experience, too much experience, being Muslim, etc. it is not easy. Here are a few things I’ve picked up along the way, and a few that were shared. There is no secret formula, and if there is I am still trying to figure it out. Remember everyone has a different journey.

Job wise, look at
1. For startup opps sign up with
2. For marketing jobs, join the yahoo group
3. Join LinkedIn Pro free for a month and check it out.
Following is a incomplete list of companies in the bay area, however, it is a good target list.

– It’s ok to apply through LinkedIn etc, but most of your jobs need to be direct to a person.

– When you find an opportunity, find someone who works there, who can forward to hiring manager.

if not, for startups and medium sized businesses, look up their management team, and send an email as follows.

Imagine you are contacting the VP of marketing Stan Smith.

In To: section, try, In bcc try

About 80% of the time one of them will work, and one will bounce.

If both bounce, try just their first name,

In subject line put down the title, and in body just send a brief email, saying here is a position, you have a fit, can they forward your email/resume to the hiring manger.
If you don’t hear from them in 48 hrs, do a followup, where you forward your last email and append to it, by saying just in one line, Dear Stan, I am sure you are very busy. Would it be possible for you to let me know if there is anyone I can follow up with or something like that, or did they get the chance to send it, etc.

7. Check out

Don’t forget the power of dua. Read Surah Waqiah, Mulk. Praise Allah, with ya Razak,  ya Karim, ya Barr, ya Wali, ya Ghani.
Will leave you with one hadith to uplift you InshAllah.
“Amazing is the affair of the believer, verily all of his affair is good and this is not for no one except the believer. If something of good/happiness befalls him he is grateful and that is good for him. If something of harm befalls him he is patient and that is good for him” (Saheeh Muslim #2999)
I am sure you have other ideas, duas please share them. May Allah make it easy for our community, country, and ummah.

  1. Very nice, and JZK for sharing with everyone.

You may want to add below to the list, something I learned when I was laid off few years back.

    – Explore state, city and federal jobs. In CA, you can find and apply for state jobs at
The website is intuitive, and most of the Exams are online. Do not be very conservative when answering experience
    related questions.

    – Join a non-profit or volunteer with state, city, police, fire dept etc. – an excellent way to get connected.

If you have any questions on above suggestions, feel free drop me an email.
